Hair Loss in Summer and Sweating (My Personal Experience)

Just so i'am clear from the beginning. I'm just sharing a personal experience that I went through, something real that happened in my everyday life. If you're into reading real stories and not polished influencer talk, follow me, I post my honest experiences.

Okay, let’s talk about it.

This summer, I started noticing something really frustrating, hair loss. Not just a few strands here and there, but more than usual. It was especially bad after showers or when I’d run my hands through my hair. At first, I thought maybe I was just being paranoid, but even people around me started noticing that my hair looked thinner.

I never had this issue before. I mean sure, we all lose some hair daily, but this felt different. I started looking at my pillow in the morning, and it had hair on it. After workouts or being out in the sun, especially when I was sweating a lot, I’d feel itchy, and when I scratched my scalp gently, I’d find more loose hair.

It freaked me out a bit, to be honest 😜

So I started doing some research and asking around. Turns out, I’m not the only one. Many people experience more hair loss in summer, especially in hot and humid environments where sweat builds up on the scalp. Here’s what I found (and what made sense to me based on my own body):

  • Sweat and oil clog hair follicles: When we sweat a lot (which is normal in summer), the sweat mixes with oil, dirt, and maybe even hair product residue. This clogs the hair follicles and can cause scalp irritation and hair shedding.

  • Dehydration: In summer, I realized I wasn’t drinking enough water. I was sweating buckets, but I wasn’t refilling properly. Dehydration affects the whole body, including your scalp and hair growth.

  • Sun exposure: Too much direct sun can dry out the hair and damage it. I used to walk around without a cap or any protection, and I didn’t realize that this was probably weakening my hair.

  • Washing too often or too little: I used to wash my hair almost every day to get rid of the sweat, but then it started feeling dry and weak. On the other hand, skipping wash days made my scalp itchy and oily. It was tricky to find a balance.

So what did I do? 😊

First of all, I started drinking more water, a lot more. I also started wearing a cap or staying in the shade when I’m out in the sun. I changed the way I wash my hair, and now I wash it about 2-3 times a week with cool water instead of hot. I also try to gently dry it instead of rubbing it with a towel.

And maybe the most important thing I started doing, I stopped stressing about it. I realized that hair goes through natural cycles and sometimes it sheds more during certain seasons. I just had to take better care of myself overall.

Now, I still lose hair, but it’s way less than before. My scalp also feels cleaner and less irritated.

Again, I’m not a doctor or hair expert. I’m just someone who dealt with this and wanted to talk about it because I know others might be going through the same thing. If that’s you, don’t panic. Try small changes and be patient.
